Yes, I know what you’re thinking – another article about the ludicrous costs associated with compliance training, how virtual is the way to go, #classroomtrainingmustfall, and all the hype associated with it. We need to be looking at all potential options and alternatives if we are to get a handle on the high cost of compliance. I’ll be sharing some thoughts and research about this, so please spare me 5 minutes while you enjoy your coffee.
Many believe that school-style classroom based training, having been in place since the early 19th century, is due an overhaul. My view on this is that this is akin to the famous Henry Ford quote: “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses”. Are we not trying to create better classrooms, when in fact we should be starting a revolution, and overhaul the current education system? Bringing this back to the topic at hand, workplace compliance training, needs a complete disruption. Many individuals and organisations have proven time and time again that learning by rote is ineffective and inefficient. How often do we hear trainers state that they plan on 20% knowledge retention for training participants, with 80% of content (which takes significant time, money and resources to develop), forgotten or ignored? How then do we change this situation? Add to this scenario, the complexity and risks associated with staff members forgetting key components of a company policy or primary requirement for regulatory compliance, and an organisation opens the door for potential fines and backlash. |
But this is easier said than done, or is it? There is technology available today capable of providing virtual advisors for staff that is up to this challenge. This technology falls into the category of Intelligence Augmentation (IA), which sets out to achieve exactly what its name implies – to augment intelligence. The key is empowerment, improving your workforce by giving them access to the information and knowledge that they need, when they need it. In so doing, organisations can disseminate regulatory compliance requirements throughout the organisation at the click of a button, entrenching the requirements into virtual advisors, and by using the virtual advisors, staff are compliant without even knowing it.
It’s time for us all to be part of the revolution, to take the step towards people empowerment, and build regulatory compliance requirements into the way we work. Virtual Advisors are here to stay, and by using them for what they are good at, we can remove the need for old school training.
